Chomp! Chomp! Florida Gator Joins Us for the Summer

For the second summer in a row, our office has been graced with the presence of a University Florida student as a summer intern. Meet Haines City native Caroline Congdon, a senior majoring in public relations who graduates in May 2015. Why did you choose this field? I knew I wanted to be a student in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida, but I didn’t know what I wanted to major in specifically. I ended up choosing public relations because I think it is a mixture of useful knowledge. Skills that you learn through public relations are skills that can be used in a variety of fields. What do you enjoy most...

5 Characteristics of a Good Public Relations Professional

I listened to a public relations webinar the other morning, and Sammy Steinlight of Steinlight Media mentioned some characteristics he felt those who work in public relations must possess if they want to go far in the field. We have the privilege of training interns each semester, so I thought I’d share Sammy’s characteristics with those of you who are seriously considering public relations as a career. These are also good characteristics to keep in mind if you’re looking for a professional to implement a PR campaign for you or your business.  Be a solid writer. You must learn to write well, write quickly, and with accuracy. Start a...

Lorrie Walker PR Likes Downtown “a Latte”

The LWPR team takes a quick break for a photo shoot.  And yes, the customized chocolate coin is a part of the team. As an intern, the Lorrie Walker Public Relations downtown office is a dream work location.  It’s close to some of Lakeland’s best coffee — an obvious perk! (In case you haven’t noticed, I like good coffee and bad puns “a latte”). In addition to great coffee, the area around LWPR also boasts some of the area’s best local lunch spots and a charming atmosphere.  I also love the close proximity to the Florida Southern College campus. Lorrie Walker started her business from the spare bedroom in her house and...

Boy Meets Girls: LWPR Welcomes Intern Nick

I started as an intern at Lorrie Walker Public Relations last semester. The PR pros at LWPR taught me so much, and I am thankful to continue my experience this semester. Let me tell you, LWPR is on the move. One new addition I’m looking forward to working with is our new intern, Nick Tsikuris. He brings fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and a friendly personality. Not only will Nick’s skills and passion benefit the office, but it will also be nice to have a male perspective in an estrogen zone full of strong female voices. Nick is a senior at Florida Southern College studying public relations and advertising.  He is one of theFlorida Southern...

Public Relations Intern Comes Back for Another Round

Florida Southern College Public Relations major Danielle Snodgrass. If you know her, Danielle Snodgrass’s face comes to mind when you think of the term “go-getter.” We are happy to announce that this go-getter has joined our team as an intern for her spring semester at Florida Southern College. Danielle is no stranger to the office, as she volunteered here last semester and worked closely on our efforts to promote downtown Lakeland. For many young college students, internships offer rewarding and invaluable experience. That’s the case for Danielle, too. Danielle says she found us by doing her homework. “I did some...

Advice for Public Relations Majors & Those Who Want to Work in This Field

Lorrie’s dog Callaghan We here at Lorrie Walker Public Relations welcome interns. We love to show them how what they’re learning in the college classroom gets applied in the real world. But I’m seeing some trends in some millennials that are disturbing. If you’re a college student or recent graduate who is serious about working in public relations or another field that requires good writing skills, this post is for you. A recent article in Fast Company states half of business leaders say millenials lack the professional skill sets needed for even entry level positions. Some areas where I find potential interns to be most...

PR Princess Joins LWC

Florida Southern College Senior Jordan Tickell is our newest LWC intern. Soon to be graduated and flung into the proverbial “real world,” Jordan brings to our office an eagerness to learn and a refreshing curiosity about the industry, helping to remind us just how nifty of a gig we have in public relations. Jordan, a native of Jacksonville, began her collegiate journey as a broadcast journalism major, and discovered soon after that she has a real knack for news and feature writing. After dabbling in print and broadcast journalism, she felt convicted to add a public relations major, in hope of becoming well-versed in various avenues of...

Laura Modrall, a 20-year-old senior at Flagler College is the newest addition to Lorrie Walker Communications, Inc. The Bartow native says she chose to attend Flagler College since it is at the center of active and historic St. Augustine.  She practices her PR skills by writing a blog about what’s happening in St. Augustine, called “The St. Augustine Clambake.” The blog started out as a project in her magazine writing class, but found it was a new and fun way to keep her creativity flowing.  The original assignment was to write a blog with a specific purpose in mind and she chose a topic she thought would be the easiest to manage. ...

Our Intern Ranks are Growing

We are excited to welcome a second student from Florida Southern College to our internship program. Karen Snir is a junior majoring in public relations and minoring in Spanish. Karen says she views this internship is a great step forward. We agree. There’s nothing like learning by doing, and that’s what we offer college interns- a chance to apply what they learn in the classroom. So far, Karen has helped out with promoting some events for one of our Lakeland non-profit clients, and she has increased her knowledge of press release writing. She’s a no-nonsense hard worker who comes in each day and gives us her best effort. Originally...
